What I Wore Today

Dear Adriano! Since you dress incredibly well and very formal, I was hoping you could help me out here. I'm looking to add another suit to my wardrobe, but as a university student my budget is rather limited. More or less, only Suitsupply is an option, and only the Havana cut with patch pockets fits me well. Therefore, what is your opinion of patch pockets in a formal business setting (banking)? Thanks. /Fred

At a time when fewer and fewer people actually wear a tie in a business setting, and sometimes not even a suit, I think today it’s safe to completely disregard rules such as patch pockets for sportscoats vs. flap pockets for business suits.

You and I will both know that patch pockets aren’t quite appropriate for business suits, but then who else will notice or care, even in banking? The idea that bankers actually know how to dress well is an urban legend, as anyone who has spent time with bankers well knows.

No one will notice you’re wearing patch pockets, because no one in a typical business environment today knows about the rule, or even knows what patch pockets are. I sometimes do a test when wearing patch pockets, I’ll ask people if they notice anything different about the jacket? Trust me, most people do not even notice such details unless you point them out.

And if someone at the office actually notices you’re wearing patch pockets on a business suit, chances are they’re also a #menswear geek, and it will act as a secret handshake, because they’ll find it kind of cool that you’re open minded enough to know how to elegantly break a CBD rule.

I think the only question worth asking about patch pockets is: are they fitting to the style and fabric of the suit? I have a neapolitan plain gray suit which I adore, which has patch pockets, but I think that it would have looked even better with flap pockets. Patch pockets look most at home on sports coats and on fabrics that have some kind of pattern or texture.

But if you really like that SuitSupply suit, go for it, even if it has patch pockets.

Today’s square features small gold dots on a brown background, with gold trim and hand-rolled edges, made in Italy by Ashear. A classic pocket square pattern, just don’t wear it with a dotted tie and you should be fine.

Good luck!
